Green Energy

Natural forms of energy surround us - and they can be used to power our vehicles, homes and business.

Renewable energy

Examples of renewable energy sources include:

  • Solar
Converting the Sun's energy into electricity and heat.
  • Wind
    Electricity from wind energy
  • Hydroelectric
Energy in flowing water is harnessed
  • Biomass
Natural materials, like wood, are burnt or turned into gas to provide energy.

They are:

  • clean and won't cause climate change
  • safe - unlike nuclear power
  • won't run out - unlike oil, gas and coal

- and there's a vast resource that's largely untapped.

What Causes Climate Change?

Climate change or global warming is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (C02) and other polluting gases in our atmosphere.

Heat from the Sun (a) is trapped by the gases in our atmosphere (b)

The gases trap heat by forming a blanket around the Earth - like the glass of a greenhouse.

Once released the greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for many years. As they build up, the planet's temperature rises.

Greenhouse gases are released by burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - and by cutting down forests.

Climate Change

Floods in Mozambique. Forest fires in Indonesia. Hurricanes in Florida. Storms in the UK. Typhoons in the Philippines. Earthquakes, tsunamis ...

Extreme weather events are predicted to become more frequent because of climate change.

International Day of Climate Action

Make a Difference on International Day of Climate Action!
Sponsored by: Care2

On October 24, 2009, thousands of people around the world are taking part in the International Day of Climate Action. December's UN climate meeting in Copenhagen is a critical juncture for the future of our planet and all of its inhabitants -- and we need YOU to show your government's leadership that combating climate change is not only politically possible, it is politically critical!

The coalition 350.org has launched the International Day of Climate Action on Saturday to bring a common goal of reducing the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere to 350 parts per million -- what our world's top scientists say is the safest upper limit for carbon dioxide on our planet.

We're already at 387 ppm. Now we need to make it clear to our world leaders that we must get back down to at least 350 ppm! You can help deliver this message by adding your name and participating in 350.org's International Day of Climate Action.

Do your part, and on this International Day of Climate Action, demand that your country's leading decision-makers go to Copenhagen with a plan to combat global warming!
